Looking after my skin has become a really important part of my daily routine. Ive always been interested in skincare and I’ve only grown more interested in it over the years. I love trying new skincare products and new trends but now I try to keep my routine simple and really make taking care of my skin a priority.
Switch to gentle products
I cringe when I think back to all those harsh skincare products I used to use when I was younger. For some reason I used to think that if a product was stinging or burning then it was working. Wtf was I thinking? I put my poor skin through hell as a teenager.
The last few years I’ve switched to more gentle products and it’s made a world of difference. Not only does my skin no longer burn after using products like the St Ives exfoliant or fragrant face washes but it’s also much clearer and softer. I’ve gone from using face washes containing essential oils and harsh chemicals to gentle fragrance-free products like The CeraVe Foaming face cleanser.
Drink enough water
I think we all know the amazing benefits of drinking lots of water is by now. Its great for your skin, hair, nails and overall health. I’m pretty good at drinking plenty of water but I definitely could do with drinking more and I do go through phases where I don’t drink enough throughout the day. An easy way to make sure you drink enough water through the day is to get a nice water bottle and bring it with you everywhere you go. I switch between using an insulated tumbler and a water bottle with a straw that’s labelled with times to drink your water.
Wear SPF everyday
I cant believe I only used to wear suncream on my face when I was outside in the summer and even then I didn’t always wear it. Opps. Wearing SPF everyday not only prevents premature ageing, burning, blotchiness and an uneven skintone but it also lowers your risk of getting skin cancer. I’m currently using the Glossier suncream which is great but once I finish the bottle, I’m going to switch the the CeraVe moisturiser with spf. I’m more likely to remember to use spf when it’s already built into my moisturiser and the CeraVe one had very good reviews.
Use a chemical exfoliant once a week
My all time favourite exfoliant is a newer addition to my skincare routine and its the Paula’s Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant. After seeing Hyram and so many other skincare lovers raving about it I decided to buy myself a small bottle. It’s a gentle chemical exfoliant you apply to your skin with a reusable cotton wool pad. It’s made to brighten skin, treat breakouts, reduce blackheads and large pores. It’s gentle enough to use twice a day and you can even apply it to your undereyes. I only use it a few times a week, sometimes it’s the only cleansing part of my routine. Make sure you always use spf after using this product because it will make your skin more vulnerable to the sun.
Simplify your routine
Since I’ve simplified my skincare routine, I’ve seen a massive improvement in my skin. It’s so important to have a consistent skincare routine not only to get visible results but for your mental health too. There’s something so therapeutic to me about doing my skincare and taking those few minutes every morning and night to look after myself. I used to have so many products in my routine and it would make doing my skincare daunting but now I only have a couple of steps and not only does my skin thank me for it but I’m more consistent with it which makes my skin look better in the long run. I think so many of us skincare enthusists want to try out every product but that’s so bad for your skin especially if it’s sensitive like mine is so stick to a solid routine and make sure you give any new skincare products enough time to work (at least a month) before deciding if it’s a good product for you or not.
I hope this post helps and you enjoyed reading it. I love skincare and its something I love reading about.
